How to Choose Lighting for a Living Room
Short answer
A living room works best with layers of light rather than one fixture doing every job. Combine a central decorative fixture with wall or table lighting so the room can shift between bright functional use and softer evening ambience.
Choose the visual anchor
A chandelier or decorative hanging light can establish the room's centre and character. Match its scale to the seating group, ceiling height and architectural style.
Add secondary light
Wall lights can add symmetry and depth, while table and floor lamps create softer pools of light for reading and evening use.
Coordinate finishes and glass
Fixtures do not need to be identical, but repeating a finish, glass colour, cut pattern or design language helps the room feel intentional.
Plan switching separately
Where possible, place the central chandelier, wall lights and lamps on separate controls. This gives more flexibility than a single all-on or all-off lighting scene.
